How to Decide Your Major

Before we get into the quiz, let’s do some self-reflection. Choosing a major isn’t about following your friends or being lured by the glitz and glam of a ‘popular’ choice. Instead, let your inner inclinations guide you. What you like to study might even be different than what profession you love (it was for me).

So here are 5 steps to take or really think about in order to narrow down your major in college:

  1. Self-Reflection: What do you love doing that makes you feel happy? What are you good at? Begin by analyzing your passions, strengths, and long-term goals.
  2. Research: Dive deep into the curriculum, future prospects, and requirements of potential majors.
  3. Consultation: Speak with college advisors, professionals in the field, or recent graduates to gather insights.
  4. Trial Period: Enroll in introductory courses, grab an internship or attend workshops to get a hands-on feel for the subject.
  5. Evaluate Future Prospects: Consider the job market, potential earnings, and career longevity associated with the major. Or read a professional’s perspective on the career path you’re thinking about.
